History

In 2004, Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake took to the internet to begin selling snowboarding equipment and opened an online store called Snowdevil. Lütke, a computer programmer, built a custom ecommerce platform for this online store. Two years later in 2006, the platform hosting Snowdevil was launched as Shopify.

Requirements

Shopify is not very specific about their technical requirements. However, information about verifying the theme for the store with JSON and also their app is available on their developer site.

Hosted or Self-hosted?

Hosting is included with the Shopfiy cost. You do not need to find your own host.

Cost

Shopify has three different plans: $29, $79, or $299 per month. This is very similar pricing to their competitor, BigCommerce. However, they do not have a maximum sales mark for a plan like BigCommerce.

Over 1.7 million companies use the Shopify CMS and it serves 175 different countries.
