In 2004, Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake took to the internet to begin selling snowboarding equipment and opened an online store called Snowdevil. Lütke, a computer programmer, built a custom ecommerce platform for this online store. Two years later in 2006, the platform hosting Snowdevil was launched as Shopify.

Wix was founded in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan.  According to the Wix website, the idea was born on the beach while they were building a website to be the basis of another start-up idea. They realized that this would be difficult and then came up with the idea to build a platform for anyone to create there own site without any coding or design skills.
