In 2004, Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake took to the internet to begin selling snowboarding equipment and opened an online store called Snowdevil. Lütke, a computer programmer, built a custom ecommerce platform for this online store. Two years later in 2006, the platform hosting Snowdevil was launched as Shopify.

BigCommerce was founded in 2009 by Eddie Machalaani and Mitch Harper who met in an online chatroom. BigCommerce is now a popular ecommerce CMS option.
